hi, thanks for posting.

i agree that human suffering as a result of hierarchy / patriarchy / the State / Empire has existed since at least the Egyptians, Babylonians, etc. but i wouldn't call those societies capitalist because economic production wasn't organized according to a market on a large scale, as much as by the will of the emperor and aristocracy.

there are some wonderful books that describe the origins of capitalism in Europe roughly 500 years ago, such as "Caliban and the Witch" by Silvia Federici. she talks about how the previous form of patriarchy / Empire (which was called feudalism) was in a crisis, only to be replaced by an even more vicious form, called capitalism. this took place through the displacement of the European peasantry from their lands, and the Witch Hunts and other attacks on women to be able to control their own communities and bodies.

i reviewed this wonderful book here: http://endofcapitalism.com/2009/11/05/who-were-the-witches-patriarchal-terror-and-the-creation-of-capitalism/

i also want to warn that a new form of patriarchy could be emerging now as capitalism breaks down, which is even more vicious and less democratic. i am calling that possibility Neo-fascism, and i talk about it a little in my synopsis: http://endofcapitalism.com/about/4-what-comes-after-capitalism/

thanks!

I'm about half way through The Shock Doctrine. Having grown up in America and been an active participant in the anti-way/anti-nuclear movements, I thought I knew how bad the Ruling Authorities could be. But this book reveals the full extent of the decision maker's paranoid approach to power and money and the price those who prefer humane systems are forced to pay. It makes me angry and depressed to realise it's all worse than I ever imagined.
I've put together a list of 12 'considerations' of what constitutes the type of human that could torture and murder his own kind as a basis for a study course that would challenge the status quo in all schools everywhere. (Let me know if I could email it to you.) A brilliant book. It has changed how I see the world.
