I disagree that non-capitalist economies require the level of energy currently in use by the globalized world today. If the economy were under the control of those living within it, rather than a wealthy ruling class, sustainability would be a real possibility – and everyone’s concern.

Perhaps it’s worth mentioning that regimes like the Soviet Union, Communist China, etc. do meet my definition of “capitalist” nations, as in State Capitalism. Economies controlled by a wealthy few, on the basis of commodity production, wage slavery, and massive industrial development.

I agree with you that we must imagine a world that does not depend on these destructive systems. You can call that Green Communism; I prefer to just call it democracy.

However, I would argue that implementing something like “Green Communism” (http://www.sublimeoblivion.com/2008/12/31/communism-is-our-road-to-redemption/) across the world, which would constrict material throughput of polluting industries, is necessary if we want to have a chance at averting the die-off that threatens us because of resource depletion and pollution/global warming.
